8月9日（木）18時から浦上教会で平和祈願祭が行われた。祈願ミサは髙見三明大司教が主司式をし、駐日教皇大使ジョセフ・チェノットゥ大司教、前田万葉枢機卿（大阪）、白浜 満司教（広島）、宮原良治司教（福岡）、浜口末男司教（大分）と40人余の司祭団が共同司式を務めた。韓国如己の会の巡礼団およそ20人も含め、各地から集まった多くの信者らが共に祈りをささげた。今年のテーマは昨年と同じく「神よ わたしをあなたの平和のために用いてください」。ミサ後は被爆マリア像を先頭に、平和公園に向けてロザリオの祈りを唱えながらたいまつ行列を行った。公園に到着した後はみことばの朗読と祈りへの招きがあり、平和を願う心を新たにした。
平和祈願祭のパンフレットには、2017年末に教皇フランシスコが頒布したカード「焼き場に立つ少年」の日本語版カードがはさみ込まれ、参列者に配布された。「焼き場に立つ少年」のカード裏面には、「戦争がもたらすもの」との教皇フランシスコの言葉と署名がある。
写真は、ミサの様子、祈願祭に参加した多くの信者ら、説教をする駐日教皇大使チェノットゥ大司教と祭壇そばにたたずむ被爆マリア像、参加した司教団を代表してミサの終わりにあいさつする前田枢機卿（枢機卿に親任後、前田枢機卿が長崎で公の場に出られたのは初めてだったため、髙見大司教がひとことお祝いの言葉を述べた）、浦上教会を出発するたいまつ行列。

キリストにおける兄弟姉妹の皆様、
髙見三明大司教様のおすすめを受けて、今日の説教を喜んで引き受けました。と申しますのは、教皇大使は、何よりもまず牧者であり、司教だからです。実際、大使の外交的役割は、福音に奉仕することなのです。
今日の福音書の箇所（ヨハネ14・23-29）でわたしたちは、イエスがこう仰せになるのを聞きました。「わたしは、平和をあなたがたに残し、わたしの平和を与える。わたしはこれを、世が与えるように与えるのではない」（27節）。
この言葉は、イエス様が弟子たちに別れを告げる場面で述べられています。キリストの平和は、わたしたちのためのご自分の愛に基づいています。「わたしがあなたがたを愛したように、互いに愛し合いなさい。これがわたしの掟である。友のために自分の命を捨てること、これ以上に大きな愛はない。わたしの命じることを行うならば、あなたがたはわたしの友である。」（ヨハネ15・12-14）イエス様は、今日、愛の実りである平和をわたしたちの心の中で、家庭における夫と妻の間、両親と子どもたちの間で、修道会の共同体の中で、小教区で、司祭同士、また司祭と司教の間の兄弟としてのかかわりの中で味わうようにと招いておられます。
キリストの平和は内面的な平和、永続する平和です。それは無償の贈り物であり、すべての人に通じる平和です。それは、心の中で生まれ、隣人に広がり、地球全体に広がります。預言者イザヤは、そのことを見事に指摘しています。「平和、平和、遠くにいる者にも近くにいる者にも。わたしは彼をいやす、と主は言われる。」（イザヤ57・19）もし平和がわたしたちの心の中にだけあるなら、ほかの人と分かち合うことができるでしょうか？「だれであれ、持っていないものを与えることはできない。」
しかしわたしたちは、愛を実践し、わたしたちの心の中と、わたしたちの間で平和を保つためには、聖霊から来る力と勇気を必要としています。フランシスコ教皇様は、『喜びに喜べ』というすばらしい使徒的勧告の中で、キリストの愛を勇気をもって証しするためにはわたしたちの生活の中で聖霊を必要としていることと、その働きを強調しておられます。「恐れや極端な警戒のため動けなくならないように、安全な領域の中にとどまるのが習慣にならないように、わたしたちは聖霊に奮い立たせていただく必要があります。」（133項）
教皇様のお言葉を補足させていただくなら、わたしはこう申し上げましょう。もしわたしたちが地理的な周辺だけでなく、わたしたちの愛と尊敬と配慮の周辺で生活している人々のもとへ行くなら、そこにキリストを見出すでしょう。イエス様は、そこにおられます。すなわちわたしたちの兄弟姉妹のうちに、彼らの傷を負った体に、彼らの傷ついた心、彼らの悩み、彼らの深い寂しさのうちにおられるのです。そこにイエス様はおられます。イエス様は、先だっての広島や高松地域などの深刻な洪水の被害を受けて苦しんでいる人々、また犠牲者の遺族とともにすでにおられます。彼らを支援する寛大な市民やボランティアの援助が届く前にすでにそこにおられたのです。ちなみに、教皇様は、自分たちの大切な人たちを失った家族のためにお見舞いと祈りと同情のメッセージを送ってくださったことをお知らせいたします。
他方、世が与える平和は、一時的なもの、計算ずくのもの、利己主義的なものです。世が与える平和は、押し付けられた平和、利益を追求する、一時的な平和です。それでは十分ではありません。わたしたちには、心からの和解に基づいた平和、愛された平和、自由で、兄弟愛に満ちた平和が必要です。そして神様は、ご自分に対する人々の罪をとがめることなく、キリストにおいて世をご自分と和解させ、わたしたちにその和解のメッセージをゆだねられたのです（二コリント5・19）。わたしたちが兄弟と和解するならいつでも、わたしたちは本当の平和を味わいます。
広島と長崎で毎年原爆を記念し行っている行事は、平和の必要性を思い起こさせます。最近、フランシスコ教皇様が署名された、憐れみの念を起こさせる写真を見てわたしたちは心を動かされました。それは、1945年の原爆の後、一人の少年がすでに亡くなっている弟をおんぶして焼き場の前に立っている写真です。これこそ、戦争と核兵器が引き起こす悲劇です。
しかし神様は無関心な方ではありません。神は人類を心にかけ、わたしたちを見捨てません。神はご自分の子をわたしたちに与えることによってわたしたちを愛してくださいます。フランシスコ教皇様は、回心することによって無関心を克服するようわたしたちを招いておられます。そして平和は連帯と慈しみと同情の文化を築く結果であると強調しておられます。
イエス様は聖ファウスティナにこう告げられました。「人類は、神の慈しみに信頼をもって向かわないなら、平和を見出すことはできません。」（『日記』、699項）キリストは、こう教えておられます。人は神の慈しみを受け、体験するだけでなく、ほかの人々に対して慈しみと同情を実践するよう招かれています。イエス様はまた多くの慈しみの小道を示してくださいました。それは、罪を赦すだけでなく、あらゆる人々の必要に手を差し伸べる小道です。
わたしたちの母であるマリア様が、兄弟姉妹を亡くして悲しむ人々を力づけ慰めてくださいますように。
MASS FOR PEACE AT NAGASAKI CATHEDRAL
(9 August 2018): (Jn. 14, 23-29)
My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
At the suggestion of Archbishop Joseph Mitsuaki Takami, I gladly accepted to preach this homily today, because the Apostolic Nuncio is, first and foremost, a Pastor, a Bishop. In fact, his diplomatic role is at the service of the Gospel.
In today’s Gospel passage we heard Jesus saying: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives (Jn. 14, 23-29).
These words are pronounced in the context of Jesus’ farewell to his disciples. Christ’s peace has been founded on his love for us. “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you” (Jn. 15, 12-14). Today Jesus invites us to enjoy peace, fruit of love, in our hearts, in our families between husband and wife, parents and children, in our religious communities, in our parishes, in our priestly fraternity and with the Bishop.
Christ’s peace is an inner peace, lasting peace, and it is a gratuitous gift and peace universal. It is born in the heart, spreads to the neighbours and to the whole globe. Prophet Isiah rightly remarks: “Peace, peace, to the far and to the near, says the Lord; and I will heal him” (Is. 57, 19). If only we have peace in our hearts, are we able to share it with others. “Nemo dat quod non habet”.
However, we need the strength and the courage which come from the Holy Spirit in order to practise love and have peace in us and among ourselves. In his beautiful Apostolic Exhortation Gaudete et Exsultate, Pope Francis dwells on the need and action of the Holy Spirit in our lives in order to bear witness to Christ’s love with courage: “We need the Spirit’s prompting, lest we be paralyzed by fear and excessive caution, lest we grow used to keeping within safe bounds” (n. 133).
Paraphrasing the Holy Father’s words I would say: So if we dare to go to the peripheries, not only geographical but also to those who live on the peripheries of our love, respect and consideration, we will find Him there; indeed, He is already there. Jesus is already there, in the hearts of our brothers and sisters, in their wounded flesh, in their hurt feelings, in their troubles and in their profound desolation. He is already there. Jesus was already there with the suffering peoples and victims of families of Hiroshima, Takamatsu provinces, affected by the recent serious floods, even before the generous civil and voluntary forces reached there to help. Here allow me to reiterate Pope’s message of condolences, prayers and sympathy for the families who lost their loved ones.
The peace that the world gives is, on the other hand, temporary, calculated, self-interested. The peace that the world gives is an imposed peace, a utilitarian and provisional peace, it is not enough. We need a peace which is loved, free and fraternal, founded on reconciliation of hearts. And God has reconciled the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation (2 Cor. 5, 19). Whenever we are reconciled with our brethren, we enjoy true peace.
The anniversaries we commemorate every year at Hiroshima and Nagasaki remind us of the need for peace. We were moved recently by the sight of a touching picture autographed by Pope Francis where a boy of Nagasaki in 1945 carries on his back his dead little brother for burial. This is the tragedy that wars and nuclear arsenals can engender.
But God is not indifferent, God cares about the mankind, God does not abandon us, he loves us by giving his son to us; Pope Francis invites us to overcome indifference by a conversion of heart; He emphasises that peace is the result of building a culture of solidarity and mercy and compassion.
Jesus told St. Faustina: “Humanity will not find peace until it turns trustfully to Divine Mercy” (Diary, n.699). Christ has taught us that man not only receives and experiences the mercy of God, but is also called to practise mercy and compassion towards others. Jesus also showed us the many paths of mercy, which not only forgives sins, but reaches out to all human needs. May Mary our Mother comfort and console all those who mourn the loss of their brothers and sisters.
